ALDE launches design competition to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) turns 70 this year and ALDE is joining the UN’s overarching campaign to celebrate the occasion with a human rights focused design competition.
This milestone document which underpins all international human rights law was drafted by representatives from all the regions of the world and was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948. Participants to ALDE’s competition are invited to express their creative talents related to human rights via artworks of their choice.
Beatriz Becerra, MEP, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Human Rights (DROI) commented: “Throughout this legislature we have been bringing debates about the situation of human rights to the European Parliament giving a voice to the many groups and organizations fighting for this cause. The Universal Declaration helped to establish human rights principles and it gave us standards that we continue to refer to in our resolutions. This anniversary is a perfect opportunity to reflect about the ways we can stand up for human rights in our everyday lives.”
ALDE’s call for competition is open to the European public at large but especially aimed at students, graphic designers and artists. Interested participants will illustrate topics falling under the three main UDHR themes of Dignity, Freedoms and Equality. A selection of the received artworks will be exhibited in the European Parliament in Strasbourg (December 2018) and they will be published on our social media channels. The three winning artists will be invited to the parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg in order to follow the human rights week and meet the Sakharov prize laureate and finalists.
