Four months after the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s, we are shocked by another murder: Slovak investigative journalist Ján Kuciak reporting on tax fraud was shot dead at his family home over the weekend. His murder, which must be thoroughly investigated, shows once again that we must not take freedom of press for granted — even not in Europe. The EU has to do its utmost to ensure that investigative journalists can work freely and without fear. They are key to reveal and fight corruption and other forms of crimes. A liberal democracy can only exist with a free press.

Petr JEŽEK, ALDE Co-Rapporteur of the Panama Inquiry Committee MEP said:

‘After Maltese Daphne Caruana Galizia, Slovak journalist Ján Kuciak and his partner murdered. Could also be related to his tax crime investigations of influential people. Unacceptable everywhere but unbelievable in EU! Perpetrators must be brought to justice!’

ALDE Group offers our condolences to their families while we keep on working on fighting tax evasion and money laundering in the EU.
