After months of negotiations, the European Parliament and the Council, led by the Bulgarian Presidency, have agreed to increase the ambition of the EU’s targets on energy efficiency. ALDE MEP Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy is pleased that both parties were finally able to reach an agreement.

The agreement increases the EU target for energy efficiency from 30% to 32,5%, with an upwards revision clause by 2023.

Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy MEP commented:

“More energy efficiency means less CO2 emissions, a reduction in natural gas use and lower energy bills. Energy savings play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. In recent years, three quarters of the CO2 reduction was due to energy savings. In order to meet our climate objectives under the Paris Agreement, the European goals for energy efficiency simply had to go up. That’s why I have pushed for more ambition during the negotiations on behalf of ALDE. If the revision clause in 2023 shows we are not on track, Member States will be forced to further tighten their energy targets. This agreement was a necessary step in the right direction”.
