European Parliament calls for a zero emissions economy and raising the EU’s 2030 climate target

Today the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for Europe to deliver a net-zero emissions economy by 2050. In view of the UN climate summit in Katowice, Poland (2–14 December) the Parliament also endorsed a Liberal and Democrat plan to raise the EU’s climate target for 2030 from 40 percent to 55 percent domestic emission reductions compared to 1990 levels.

Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy, MEP and ALDE environment committee coordinator tabled the amendment for an increased 2030 target:
“Europe should step up its climate action, waiting longer will only increase costs. More carbon cuts in the next years will boost green investments and reduce the burden of fuel costs on the economy. National governments should back stronger climate protection and raise the EU’s climate target well before 2020. The Parliament also calls on countries outside of Europe to enhance their climate actions.”

The European Commission is expected to publish a long-term climate strategy in November this year. On the basis of the strategy the debate on EU climate ambition is expected to continue. Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy will take part in the European Parliament’s delegation to the Katowice climate summit.
