Liberal and Democrat MEPs back plan for cleaner trucks and electric buses

ALDE MEPs today backed plans to cut greenhouse-gas emissions for lorries and buses over the coming decade. The European Parliament agreed a proposed 35% reduction target for new heavy-duty vehicles to reduce CO2 emissions by 2030, with an intermediate target of 20% by 2025. Manufacturers will also have to ensure that their sales of zero- and low-emission vehicles represent a 20% market share by 2030.

Nils Torvalds MEP, ALDE shadow rapporteur commented today:

“I am delighted that, for the first time, we are creating CO2 emission standards for new heavy-duty vehicles in the EU. By demanding further innovation this legislation will create a path for Europe to maintain its technological leadership for truck manufacturers and component suppliers.

Transport is the only major sector in the EU where greenhouse gas emissions are still rising. In order to live up to our own climate ambitions and to our promises under the Paris Climate Agreement, we need to break this trend now. The IPCC report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels paints a clear picture: if we cannot lower our emissions now, we will miss our window of opportunity — at a large cost.”
