Liberals and Democrats: EU proposals to tackle single-use plastics welcome
ALDE Group MEPs have today cautiously welcomed the European Commission’s proposal aimed at tackling single-use plastics in the European Union, but believe the proposals must be built on if they are to deliver their intended objective.
Frédérique Ries MEP, recently appointed EP rapporteur on this important legislation stated:
“Today the European Commission has clearly committed itself to a very broad and ambitious policy of protecting the environment, the seas and the oceans, which I strongly welcome.”
“European citizens are demanding a comprehensive approach and stand ready to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste, as they’re now doing with plastic bags. The European Union has taken this important first step and now EU Member States must also commit themselves to combating the scourge of plastic waste”.
“Whilst it is important we do not fall prey to plastic phobia, we do need drastic measures to incentivise the responsible use of plastics, in particular where alternatives already exist, as is the case with cotton bud sticks, plastic cutlery and plastic straws.
“As rapporteur for the European Parliament, I look forward to working with all relevant industrial sectors , NGOs, fellow MEPs and EU Governments to enhance these proposals.”
Gerben — Jan Gerbrandy MEP, ALDE coordinator on the Environment Committee commented;
“We need urgent action on plastics pollution. It is quite apparent from the restrictions that the Commission has proposed that they take the issue seriously. A common European approach is absolutely necessary to make sure that we have a level playing field, from prevention, product requirements, the polluter pays principle or outright bans, not just to protect the environment but to promote green growth. Only with decisive steps can we tackle plastic waste and transition towards a circular economy.
“Now the European Parliament and the Council have to swiftly build on these proposals as marine litter and other plastic waste is increasing exponentially. No time should be lost and we should start working on this proposal without delay.”
