Today, the European Parliament has adopted the agreement on a mandatory transparency register. This agreement, between the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission, is an important step to improve transparency within the European institutions and ethical standards and transparency, as well, for interest representatives. Five years after the proposal from the Commission, here we are and it’s a victory.

Renew Europe supports this agreement since the beginning. Indeed, the current Transparency Register only applies to the European Parliament and the Commission. It is a light regime and it is clear that the different European institutions should improving the transparency concerning the access by the interest representatives to the decision-makers. Therefore Renew Europe welcomes the change of the Council’s status: from an observer to a formal party to the agreement. However, Renew Europe expects more from the Council in the future.

The Agreement adopted by the European Parliament — with the support of Renew Europe — clarifies several obligations on the registrants in order to prevent the conflict of interest. The registrants will have to provide more information about policies, initiatives and legislatives proposals they are targeting. It is a key to enhance transparency.

Renew Europe strongly believes that high ethical standards and transparency for interest representation are essentials to ensure the trust that citizens have in the European institutions. “Getting the three Institutions to move on together has been long and complicated, but the European Parliament will continue to pull this forward. Come on, let’s get on with it”, says Maite Pagazaurtundúa, the Renew Europe shadow rapporteur on this file.
