Trade Policy Review : Openness, resilience and values-based trade must to be at the heart of the EU Trade policy.
Members of the International Trade Committee (INTA) in the European Parliament adopted today their position on the Trade Policy Review. Renew Europe very much welcomes the timely launch of this review which commits to placing openness, resilience and values-based trade at the heart of the EU Trade policy.
MEP Barry Andrews (Fianna Fáil Party, Ireland), Renew Europe shadow rapporteur on this file declared:
« Renew Europe remains firmly committed to open and rules-based trade. We cannot and should not separate “open” from “strategic autonomy” — I very much welcome the progress made today, the adoption of the resolution by the Committee provides a platform for delivery in key trade policy areas ».
The resolution adopted by the INTA committee calls on the Commission to explain when and how it will increase the resilience of EU supply chains. Particular focus was given to supporting SMEs, both in the context of the current crisis and beyond. Renew Europe emphasized the role diversification can play in increasing resilience, the importance of international cooperation in facilitating such diversification and our commitment to seeking multilateral and plurilateral solutions to trade irritants. Finally, Renew Europe insisted that all policies adopted be evidence-based following detailed sector-by-sector analysis.
